Chieftain’s Chatter Aug 2019

Dear All,

Chieftain, Alan Wallace

A warm welcome back to many of you, following the long summer break. It’s been relatively quiet in terms of Society events since my last Chieftains Chatter, but rest assured, your committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes, planning our forthcoming events. Before I cover these, let me first thank all those who attended our AGM and Whisky Tasting event back in April.

At our 2019 AGM, members re-elected the same 2019/20 committee from the previous year. On one hand, this is great, as we have a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to managing Society activities and events. On the other hand, we do need to encourage more of our members to consider supporting us by joining the committee. This will ensure that we bring in new ideas, and, provide strength in depth, especially when existing committee members move on (job transfer, repatriation etc.).

Being on the committee is a lot of fun, and it’s great be part of a team who can plan and schedule top quality events, time after time. A very satisfying feeling! If you would like to get more involved, please contact me, or one of the committee members, and we’ll take it from there. We’d love to have you on board!

Our AGM was followed by a Society social evening, with a whisky tasting competition, quiz, great music, great food and great people. Once again, thanks to our Vice-Chieftain Kenny Ross, and his wife Linda, for hosting this event.

I attended a couple of events in my role as Chieftain, during the summer months. Firstly, in June, the Annual Commemorative Ceremony at God’s Little Acre in Batu Gajah near Ipoh, which commemorated those who lost their lives during the Malayan Emergency (1948 to 1960),

Then the Annual Awards Ceremony at The Alice Smith School, where I presented the Society- sponsored award for the top Humanities student. The Society are trustees of the school, and it was a privilege to attend and share in such a happy occasion for staff and students alike, as their academic year of hard work ended.

Welcome Back evening

Along with the Loyal Societies of St George’s, St David’s, St Patrick’s and the Association of British Women in Malaysia (ABWM), we would like to invite all of you to a “Welcome Back” social event on Saturday 28th September 2019, at Healy Mac’s in Publika. It’s the first time we have joined forces with our Loyal Society colleagues, for such an event, so let’s make it a successful one. Please refer to the flyer on the website for further details.

St Andrews Ball

Our next formal event will be the St. Andrews Ball, on Saturday 23rd 2019 at the Impiana Hotel, when we will celebrate all that’s good about our homeland, with a 4-course dinner accompanied by wine and, of course, a dram or two. The evening will culminate with music and dancing led by the talented “Clappy Doo’ ceilidh band. Tickets are on sale now, via our Society website.

After the festive break, we’re straight into Burns Night on the 25th January 2020, and then, on 21st March 2020, the 7th KL Highland Games. But more on next year’s events in my next edition of Chieftains Chatter.

See you at the Welcome Back evening, and St Andrews Ball!

Yours Aye,
Alan Wallace
128th Chieftain of the Selangor St Andrew’s Society
