Chieftains’ Chatter – December 2019
Dear All,
Where on earth has the year gone? It’s been a quick one, hasn’t it?
For the committee, the last few months have been busy ones; planning, preparing and putting on top events for Society members and guests.
Our “Welcome Back” pub mingle evening on September 28th in Healy Mac’s Publika proved to be a hit with those who attended, and it was great to see how we, along with the Loyal Societies of St George’s, St David’s, St Patrick’s and the Association of British Women in Malaysia (ABWM) joined forces to put on a great social night. It was also a great opportunity to promote our St Andrews Ball.
I attended the Alice Smith Eco-day on November 2nd which showcased how the students and staff at Alice Smith school are encouraging us all to move towards a more environmentally aware lifestyle. This family day also included NGO’s, eco-friendly charities and local eco-craft booths. The Society will adopt a similar approach when it comes to our KL Highland Games on March 21st, 2020, with the “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” message being promoted.
Also, in November, I attended, with my wife Carol, the annual Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in KL. As always, this is a very emotional occasion, and it was a privilege to once again represent the Society in paying respects to those who suffered during these years of conflict.
The St Andrews Ball on 23rd November at the Impiana Hotel was a fantastic celebration of all that’s good about our homeland, with a 4-course dinner, including haggis, neeps and tatties, accompanied by wine and, of course, a dram or two. The evening entertainment was amazing with pipers from the St John’s Alumni Pipe Band, the “Vox Suara” choir with their wonderfully talented singers, and traditional music and dancing led by our favourite ceilidh band, “Clappy Doo”, who we once again flew in specially from Scotland.
After the festive break, we head straight into Burns Night on the 25th January 2020. This event will take place at the “Cedar on 15” restaurant, in the Impiana Hotel. Tickets are now on sale through the Society website, and are expected to sell out quickly, due to the limited number of tickets available.

The Society AGM will be on Saturday 7th March, followed by our Social Evening & Whisky Tasting. Can I urge members to come and support us and have your say, and bring your guests along to enjoy some typical Scottish friendship and hospitality. Further details will be confirmed in my next edition of Chieftains Chatter.
Then, on 21st March 2020, it’s the 7th KL Highland Games. We will be having an Eco-friendly event this time with a big emphasis on “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” for plastics.
On behalf of the Selangor St Andrews Society, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you at the Burns Night!
Yours Aye,
Alan Wallace
128th Chieftain of the Selangor St Andrew’s Society
